Often referred to as silver to Bitcoin’s gold, Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that, although it has forked from the Bitcoin blockchain, has managed to create its own unique space in the cryptocurrency space.

Despite more than a decade in the business, the Litecoin network has managed to hold its own, emerging as a leading mode of payment across more than 2000 retails and sealing its position as a preferred cryptocurrency for online casinos and gaming platforms. With several developments, including inroads into the banking sector and an unprecedented rise in transaction volumes, going from 196.55 million LTC in August 2023 to a whopping 412.37 million LTC in August 2024, crypto enthusiasts and investors are left wondering what’s next for this altcoin.

Can we expect LTC to be one of the biggest gainers in the upcoming Bull Run? With crypto asset managers pitching LTC like never before, is this the right time to buy Litecoin? Will Litecoin eventually break through from a double-digit price a piece and rally past $100?

Let’s decode LTC's future price trajectory and determine whether this altcoin is a worthy addition to your crypto wallet.

Litecoin Network Overview

Litecoin is a fork of Bitcoin, created by Charlie Lee in 2011 as a peer-to-peer payment system. It is one of the first altcoins derived from Bitcoin’s open-source code. Litecoin was first released via an open-source client on GitHub in October 2011, followed by the network going live in November 2011 with the genesis block being mined.

Like Bitcoin, Litecoin uses the proof-of-work consensus mechanism. It also employs the Scrypt hashing function, which requires much higher memory requirements compared to Bitcoin’s SHA-256 and RIPEMD-160 hashing functions.

Litecoin creates new blocks four times faster than Bitcoin—every 2.5 minutes instead of 10 minutes. It also has a coin limit of 84 million, which is four times bigger than Bitcoin's 21 million, making acquiring Litecoin much easier.

Key Metrics Value
LTC Market Cap $4,883,195,168
LTC Rank by Market CAP #21
LTC Circulating Supply 74,901,344 LTC
LTC Total Supply 84,000,000 LTC
LTC Maximum Supply 84,000,000 LTC
LTC All-Time High $410.26 (May, 2021)
LTC All-Time Low $1.15 (January, 2015)

This ‘lite version of Bitcoin’ employs a simpler algorithm—hence the name “Lite”—which consumes less energy and can operate on more affordable hardware. Litecoin is often used as a testing ground for upgrades and innovations such as the Lightning Network, SegWit, Atomic swaps and the privacy feature MimbleWimble. Many of these upgrades are tested on Litecoin for an eventual extension to the much larger network of Bitcoin. The converse holds good, too, as Litecoin is quick to lap up any breakthrough developments on Bitcoin.

Unlike Bitcoin, which uses the SHA-256 hashing algorithm, Litecoin uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm, which is less demanding on its resources. Scrypt is also more resilient towards large-scale hardware attacks on the currency, making it a safe option against crypto thefts.

Maintaining its focus on faster transactions, Litecoin adopted SEgWit in 2017. SegWit is a transaction format that separates data from signatures, increases throughput and transaction capacity, and prevents transaction malleability. Shortly after Litecoin’s successful adoption and implementation, Bitcoin adopted SegWit later that year.

2017 also saw the Litecoin network execute its first Lightning Network transaction, thereby demonstrating enhanced transaction speed and lower fees. Litecoin has also been a frontrunner in implementing Atomic swaps, a technology that enables a trustless exchange of cryptocurrencies across different blockchains, eliminating the need for crypto exchanges. Atomic swaps are a big leap for blockchain regarding interoperability and decentralization.

Litecoin is widely used in casinos as a mode of payment due to its fast processing speed, which is typically instantaneous. Litecoin is considered one of the most secure cryptocurrencies, much like Bitcoin. Also, the altcoin has low transaction fees and high maximum deposit limits, making it a preferred cryptocurrency for online casinos. In fact, to encourage gamblers to use Litecoin as a payment method, casinos also offer specific deposit bonuses or a deposit match for those using Litecoin. Some leading casino and gambling websites that use Litecoin are Stake, Lucky Block, Cloudbet, Flush, and more.

In addition to online gaming, Litecoin is widely used for micropayments and cross-border transactions due to its low processing fees and fast processing time.

Litecoin’s strongest premise is its use as a payment token, especially in online gaming. To boost its position as a mode of payment, Litecoin launched Litecoin Gaming in 2021, which is an esports organization.

In 2021, Litecoin also bridged access to Ethereum-compatible DeFi protocols using interoperability protocols. In the same year, Litecoin also launched OmniLite, an open-source platform that facilitates the creation of decentralized tokens and smart contracts along with crypto assets such as tokens and NFTs. Omnilite also facilitates blockchain-based crowdfunding, creating custom currencies. As Omnilite is a layered protocol on Litecoin’s blockchain, every digital asset built on Omnilite can leverage Litecoin’s low transaction costs and reputable security.

In 2024, Litecoin made inroads into the banking sector with a 775 million strategic partnership with BBVA, a global bank.

Litecoin now eyes an upcoming ETF, with Justin Lee showing optimism for the same at the Litecoin Summit in Nashville earlier this year.

Litecoin Price History

Litecoin’s supply is controlled by its protocol, which specifies both the issuance rate and the maximum supply limit. Since its launch in 2011, Litecoin has been through multiple crests and troughs and has displayed significant volatility.

The altcoin was launched in 2011 and quickly scaled up to a price of $0.30. The crypto payments ecosystem quickly recognized Litecoin's core competencies as a fast and affordable transaction platform. Litecoin also garnered media attention for its similarity to Bitcoin, which led to its price spike.

Litecoin surged to approximately $5 within a month, a sizeable 1566.66% price increase. Shortly after, Litecoin’s price increased tenfold to just shy of $50. However, this upward trajectory was short-lived, as the entire crypto space took a turn for the worse as Mt. Gox, a Bitcoin exchange in Tokyo, filed for bankruptcy.

It took Litecoin a while to resurrect itself from this pitfall. In January 2017, Litecoin exchanged hands at around $4, thanks to its active development and investor interest. The bull run of 2017-2018 has been one of the most significant price rallies for Litecoin as it surged to unprecedented levels and clocked in at a high of over $300 in December 2017. This was fueled by its adoption of SegWit and the Lightning Network.

Since 2018, Litecoin has experienced volatility and price consolidation along with occasional price spikes. Despite its price volatility, Litecoin sealed its position as a stable crypto platform and sat tight in the top 20 cryptos by market cap. The introduction of Omnilite saw the price of Litecoin surge to an all-time high of $410 in May 2021.

Litecoin’s price spike couldn’t be sustained, and it faced regular correction cycles and price rallies over the next few years.

In 2024, Litecoin received some cheer, thanks to large-scale market recovery and the much-applauded news of Russia legalizing crypto mining. The price of LTC scaled up from $50 a piece to $68 a piece in just 13 days.

Despite multiple unsuccessful attempts to breach the $70 price ceiling, LTC couldn’t make the cut due to profit booking from short-term investors. At the time of writing, LTC is currently exchanging hands at $65.2.

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction 2024

Despite the correction Litecoin suffered in the first half of August 2024, there are several reasons to be upbeat about the short-term prospects of this altcoin.

Litecoin recently saw an unprecedented rise in transaction volumes, going from 196.55 million LTC in August 2023 to a whopping 412.37 million LTC in August 2024. The LTC on-chain volume skyrocketed to $26.5 billion this month, which is 5X the asset’s current market cap. This demonstrates the increased investor interest in the platform, which could propel the price of LTC further in the coming months.

Another upside for Litecoin in August 2024 is a record $1.5 million raised by DTX Exchange (DTX), with the highest inflow from Ethereum & Litecoin whales.

Litecoin is known to mirror Bitcoin’s price movements, and there is no denying that Bitcoin is a major market maker in the cryptocurrency world. As pointed out by leading crypto experts, we expect a Bitcoin price surge following its successful Bitcoin halving event. Bitcoin price predictions also point towards similar upward trajectories. Hence, we can expect Litecoin to climb its price chart, too.

Further, Litecoin is seeing consistent interest from institutional investors, particularly Grayscale, a leading crypto asset manager. The firm is consistently picking up Litecoin regardless of market corrections. Greyscale recently increased its LTC holdings from 1.75 million LTC to 1.85 million LTC as of late August 2024. Through the Grayscale Litecoin Trust, the firm enables investors to gain access and exposure to Litecoin without buying or storing the altcoin.

Last month, Litecoin became the third crypto to be offered by investment giant Fidelity Investments to its customers. This points towards a large-scale positive market sentiment and higher investor exposure towards Litecoin, which will certainly increase its price soon.

In fact, as of July 2024, Litecoin surpassed biggies such as Polygon, Ethereum and Tether to become the most commonly used cryptocurrency for transactions on the BitPay platform.

Considering these factors, we expect Litecoin to tease the all-important $100 mark and surpass it by the end of Q4 2024.

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction 2025

As of 2023, over 2000 merchants and retailers accept Litecoin as a mode of payment. Leading crypto analysts believe that Litecoin will see an increased acceptance as a global payment method in 2024-2025, which should increase the altcoin’s demand, improve its social sentiment and boost its price in 2025.

Additionally, Litecoin has been growing on more than one parameter. Recently, the altcoin reached an all-time high in its hash rate of 1.26 PH/s. For context, Hashrate is the metric that measures a blockchain network's computational power and efficiency. Simply put, it is a measure of how many calculations a platform can perform per second. A Hashrate is not just indicative of a platform's speed; it also indicates that, most often, more miners are contributing to the computational power of the network. More miners indicate more security, integrity, and decentralization of the network.

At the recent Litecoin Summit in Nashville in early August 2024, Charlie Lee revealed that the altcoin is all set to make inroads into the banking sector through a strategic partnership with BBVA, a leading global bank. This $775 billion integration will allow customers of this bank to buy and manage their LTC holdings seamlessly through the bank’s app. Litecoin is indeed taking a huge step forward in bridging the gap between traditional finance and banking and the world of digital finance and cryptocurrencies.

Keeping these factors in mind, we have an optimistic price prediction for Litecoin for 2025.

However, given the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies, we encourage investors to conduct research before making investments.

Our Litecoin price prediction for 2025 in USD is $ 138.47 (maximum), $ 95.23 (minimum) and $ 113.04 (average).

This Litecoin price prediction for 2025 when converted to INR becomes– INR 11,610.70 (maximum), INR 7,985.03 (minimum) and INR 9,478.40 (average).

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction 2030

LTC has a halving event, much like Bitcoin. The last Litecoin halving event was successfully concluded in August 2023. With the next halving event scheduled for July 2027, we can expect the positive ripples to spill into 2028-2030. For the uninitiated, the Litecoin halving mechanism helps manage the token's supply over time, thus eliminating the possibility of oversupply and enabling a potential price increase. Flitpay has comprehensively covered the potential price impact of the previous Litecoin halving event in our blog, available here.

Further, at the recent Litecoin Summit in August 2024 in Nashville, founder Charlie Lee shared his optimism about a potential Litecoin ETF in the US in the near future. While establishing an ETF is not an overnight affair, if one does indeed come into existence shortly, it could propel the price of this altcoin to all-new highs.

Hence, our price prediction for Litecoin for 2030 is positive yet wide, as making long-term cryptocurrency price predictions comes with its caveats and cautions.

Our Litecoin price prediction for 2030 in USD is– $ 221.34 (maximum), $ 136.22 (minimum) and $ 190.16 (average).

The same Litecoin price prediction for 2030 in INR is– INR 18559.35 (maximum), INR 11422.04 (minimum) and INR 15944.91 (average).

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction 2040

In the long term, Litecoin’s technical similarity to Bitcoin would certainly work to its advantage. The Litecoin network is often a testing ground for updates and new technologies that are lined up for Bitcoin. This gives the altcoin exposure to a robust development pathway akin to the Mighty B. The technical similarities between Litecoin and Bitcoin also allow Litecoin to easily implement solutions and technologies that Bitcoin has ushered into its network. A case in point is the launch of BRC-20 in 2023, shortly after which Litecoin adopted a similar standard called LTC-20. The hype surrounding BTC-20 also led to a price hike for LTC.

Litecoin's adoption of SegWit in May 2017 was a successful test of the technology's viability on the larger Bitcoin network, and Bitcoin later adopted it as a result in August 2017. This is indeed a win-win situation for both platforms.

Long-term macroeconomic factors will also be major determinants of LTC’s price. These include interest rates, the regulatory framework surrounding cryptocurrencies, and the growth of decentralized blockchain technology. Additionally, the cryptocurrency industry projects a positive long-term outlook. Valued at USD 910.3 million in 2021 with an expected CAGR of 11.1% for the next decade, the crypto world certainly holds tremendous promise, which is positive news for secure, scalable and well-established altcoins such as LTC.

Further, Litecoin is scheduled for a halving event in 2029, which should have positive price repercussions in 2040, as the supply of the altcoin will have been corrected and consolidated. Hence, we can expect a bullish run for Litecoin in 2040.

However, considering the volatility of cryptocurrencies and the limitations of making long-term price predictions, our price prediction for Litecoin in 2040 is positive but wide.

Our Litecoin price prediction for 2040 in USD is $ 380.23 (maximum), $ 184.33 (minimum) and $ 260.34 (average).

The same Litecoin price prediction for 2040 in INR is INR 31882.28 (maximum), INR 15456.07 (minimum) and INR 21829.50 (average).

Litecoin Price Prediction 2040 (USD) $380.23 $184.33 $260.34
Litecoin Price Prediction 2040 (INR) INR 31,882.28 INR 15,456.07 INR 21,829.50

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction 2050

Making long-term price predictions for any cryptocurrency has its challenges of volatility and unpredictability of the crypto market. If Litecoin continues its stead as a trustable, secure and transparent platform, we can see the altcoin enjoying long-term gains and snowballing into one of the leading cryptos in 2050. A major determinant of Litecoin’s long-term projections is also the general outlook towards cryptos as an investment avenue, investors’ risk appetite and macro economic factors.

Considering these factors, our LTC price prediction for 2050 is wide and neutral.

Our Litecoin price prediction for 2050 in USD is $ 578.12 (maximum), $ 284.55 (minimum) and $ 410.18 (average).

The same Litecoin price prediction for 2050 when converted to INR becomes INR (maximum), INR (minimum) and INR (average).

Will Litecoin Reach $1000?

For Litecoin to reach $1000, several factors come into play. Over the long run, bullish market sentiments can rally this altcoin to break the triple-digit mark. Further, encouraging macroeconomic factors, positive investor sentiment, low interest rates and an affinity to invest in cryptocurrencies can help Litecoin’s price growth.

Also, the Litecoin network would have to continue with its robust development plans and chart our newer avenues of operations that go beyond ETFs, alliances with the banking sector, and more.

Having said that, as Litecoin is exchanging hands at $65.2, breaching the $1000 price ceiling would involve a gigantic price leap of 1433.74%. Given the information at hand currently, this seems like a far stretch.

Unless there is an unprecedented bull rally and upbeat investor sentiment towards Litecoin, we may not see LTC trade at $1000.

Can Litecoin Hit $10,000?

For Litecoin to hit $10,000, the altcoin would have to experience a price rise of 15,237.42%. We think it is unlikely that LTC can clock in such a price increase. With the current growth trajectory and tokenomics of Litecoin, we do not see the altcoin reaching $10,000.
